Ajwain & Misri — Simple Ayurvedic Digestive Remedy

          What are they?
Ajwain (carom seeds) — aromatic seeds rich in thymol and essential oils, traditionally used as a carminative and antispasmodic. Misri (rock sugar) — unrefined crystallized sugar with a cooling effect, used to soothe throat irritation and balance strong flavors.
Medicinal benefits when combined
- Improves digestion: Ajwain stimulates digestive enzymes; chewing with Misri makes it gentler and palatable.
- Relieves gas and bloating: Carminative action of ajwain reduces trapped gas and intestinal cramps.
- Reduces acidity and heartburn: Misri’s mild cooling effect balances acidity.
- Soothes throat and mild cough: Ajwain’s expectorant oils plus Misri’s soothing sweetness help ease throat irritation.
- Freshens breath & oral hygiene: Antimicrobial oils reduce oral bacteria while chewing increases saliva.
- Quick energy boost: Misri supplies fast glucose for mild energy lift after a heavy meal.
How it works in the body
When chewed, ajwain releases volatile oils (like thymol) that stimulate gastric secretions and relax intestinal muscles. Misri dissolves and provides a cooling, palatable medium that reduces the perceived pungency of ajwain and soothes mucous membranes in the throat and stomach. Together they act within minutes to ease digestion, reduce bloating, and clear mild chest congestion.
Recommended dosage & use
- Typical: 1/2 tsp ajwain + 1/2 tsp misri, chewed well after meals or when experiencing acidity/gas.
- For cough or throat irritation: repeat twice daily (morning & evening).
- Do not exceed 1 teaspoon total per day for routine use.
Precautions
- Not recommended in large amounts for people with diabetes (Misri contains simple sugars).
- Avoid high doses of ajwain during pregnancy (may stimulate uterine activity) — consult a doctor.
- Stop if you experience allergic reactions (rash, breathing difficulty).
- If symptoms persist (severe chest pain, prolonged vomiting, high fever), seek medical care.
Quick recipe
Mix and store in a small airtight jar: 2 tbsp ajwain + 2 tbsp coarsely crushed misri. Use 1/2–1 tsp after meals as needed.
