What is ESE / IES?
The Engineering Services Examination (ESE), also referred to as the IES exam, is conducted by UPSC to recruit engineers into various central engineering services. The selection is done through a three-stage process: Prelims (objective), Mains (descriptive), and Personality Test / Interview.

- Notification Released: 18 September 2024
- Last Date to Apply (first window): 08 October 2024, 6:00 PM
- Re-opened / Extended Application Window: 18 October 2024 to 22 November 2024
- Preliminary Exam (Prelims): 08 June 2025
- Main / Conventional Exam: 22 June 2025
Vacancies & Branch Breakdown
The total number of vacancies notified for ESE 2025 is 457 posts. Of these, approximately 232 posts are for regular engineering services, and ~225 posts are for the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) cadre.

- Civil Engineering: ~90
- Mechanical Engineering: ~20
- Electrical Engineering: ~42

Eligibility Criteria
- Educational: BE / BTech degree (or equivalent) in relevant engineering discipline (Civil / Mechanical / Electrical / E&TC).
- Age: 21–30 years (relaxations apply for reserved categories under government rules).
- Nationality: Indian citizen (or other eligible categories as per UPSC rules).
Exam Pattern & Selection Process
- Preliminary (Stage I): Objective / MCQ — General Studies & Engineering Aptitude + Engineering discipline paper.
- Main / Conventional (Stage II): Descriptive / conventional papers in the chosen engineering discipline.
- Personality Test / Interview (Stage III): Interview to assess suitability, communication, etc.

How to Apply
- Visit UPSC Official Website.
- Go to UPSC’s online portal (ORA / Online Registration) to register or login.
- Fill the ESE application form, upload required documents (photo, signature, category certs).
- Pay application fee (Rs. 200 for General / OBC / EWS; exemptions for SC / ST / PwBD / women).
- Save & print acknowledgment / confirmation for your records.
Preparation Tips
- Prepare a subject-wise timetable and solve past year ESE papers.
- Practice objective papers under timed conditions for Prelims.
- For Mains, write full descriptive answers and focus on structuring & presentation.
- Take mock interviews or group discussion sessions to improve communication.
