Indian Oil Discovers Gas in Andaman Offshore Block – First Time Ever

Indian Oil Ltd has announced a historic milestone with the discovery of natural gas in the Andaman Sea. This is the first confirmed hydrocarbon occurrence in the region, made at the Vijayapuram-2 exploratory well in the shallow-water offshore block AN-OSHP-2018/1.

Exploration Details

The gas was encountered during initial production testing, with samples collected during intermittent inflows. Preliminary assessments indicate the presence of a hydrocarbon source, migration pathway, or accumulation, guiding future exploration strategies.

Strategic Significance

This discovery is pivotal for India’s energy security. Currently, India imports approximately 88% of its crude oil and 50% of its natural gas. The Andaman Sea, previously underexplored, may hold significant reserves, reducing dependency on imports.

Future Prospects

While the exact size of the discovery is yet to be determined, it indicates strong potential for further exploration. Additional testing and drilling are planned to assess the full capacity of this find.

This development is expected to bolster India’s energy sector, attract investments, and contribute to national economic growth.
